Scottish Heritage North Carolina
Scotland In Our Backyard: A New Video Series
Celebrating Culture Through Music, Dance, Folklore, and Language

Scottish Heritage North Carolina Preservation | Scottish Cultural Outreach Foundation
North Carolina boasts a rich Scottish heritage that has influenced its culture for generations. From the scenic Appalachian Highlands to the lively Grandfather Mountain Highland Games, Scottish traditions continue to thrive. However, many North Carolinians, especially younger generations, may not fully appreciate their deep cultural roots.
The Scottish Cultural Outreach Foundation aims to bridge this gap by creating 12 engaging YouTube videos exploring various aspects of Scottish heritage in North Carolina. Supported by the North Carolina Humanities Council, this project will highlight the beauty and significance of the Scots Gaelic language, Highland Dance, Scottish folklore, bagpipes, and history. The goal is to foster cultural pride, understanding, and appreciation through interactive and educational content.
Why Preserving Scottish Heritage in North Carolina Matters
The Scottish diaspora in North Carolina has contributed significantly to the state's history and culture. Yet, as generations pass, there is a risk of these traditions being forgotten. Through this project, we aim to reignite interest in Scottish heritage and its relevance to North Carolinians today.
A standout contributor to this initiative is Màiri MacInnes, a celebrated Scottish Gaelic singer from South Uist. Known for her work preserving Scots Gaelic language and music, Màiri has performed internationally, including at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games in North Carolina. Her involvement underscores the global significance of Scottish culture and its local impact here in the state.

Making Scottish Heritage Accessible Through Digital Media
To reach a broad audience, the videos will be available on YouTube. With closed captioning and downloadable resources for educators and families, the series will be both inclusive and engaging. This approach aligns perfectly with the North Carolina Humanities Council's mission to connect communities through cultural experiences.
Supplementary materials, such as discussion guides and activity sheets, will help integrate the videos into classroom settings and family discussions. This ensures that the cultural preservation efforts extend beyond the screen and into everyday learning.
